What a wonderful surprise! Far from the crowds of popular tourist areas, Pulau Moyo is undeveloped, unpretentious, and untainted. This is Indonesia at its best. Pulau Moyo is a delight in and of itself, but staying at Maryan Moyo provided an extra special experience. Moyo Bungalows has a lovely setting, directly on the beach, with a very efficient and organized manager, Firman, who is eager to please. Firman, who seems to take on every role at the guesthouse, went out of his way to make us at home and to prepare food that would delight our tastebuds. My husband enjoyed fresh grilled fish every evening for 5 days, each night with a different sauce. I enjoyed a variety of vegetarian options that were all delicious and freshly prepared. There is a lovely seating area, directly on the beach, that is great for breakfast or for relaxing in the evening with a cold coconut water in hand. The sunsets are to die for! Excellent snorkeling is possible just in front of the bungalows with pristine coral and beautiful fish. I can't wait to go back!
Firman the host was extremely friendly and co operative with an excellent command of English.. Due to power availability being 1800 hrs t0 0600 hours soft drinks /beer can be a bit warm, however Firman arrangesd for ice to be on hand to keep drinks cold. A trip to the "Big Water fall" is a must but the road is dangerous, once there it is really great. Accomodation is excellent and very new. There are plenty of fish and good coral should you want to snorkell or dive along the house reef. Better areas are along the beaches to the south of the Wharf. For tranport arrangements best talk to Firman prior to leaving Sumbawa Besar as he can make arrangements for you.
The roads especially those outside of the Villiage of Labuan Aji.. Generally costs on the island are higher than on other similar islands, Although the boat from Sumbawa Besar is just a slow boat used essentially for Villiage transport it is very cheap (Rp 75,000) for a two hour trip, however there can be long delays before it leaves. Returning to Sumbawa Besar is no problem and leaves on time (0700). There are fast charter boats but they are extremely expensive.
Loved what was too short a stay at Maryan Moyo. Owner very friendly, food delicious even though service a little slow. Nice cold beers. The location is right on the beach but can only swim at high tide due to rock shelf. Was enjoyable to wander around the local village. Locals very friendly and engaging. Moyo island is really quiet and peacful but am sure it will become more popular in the future. Organised ojeck to take us to Mata Jitu waterfall which was so refreshing and peacful. Had the whole place to ourselves. Will definately return and visit more parts of the island.
We stayed at this place for 2 nights and amazed with the service. Good food (fresh fish and good vegetables) and friendly staff! They are located close to pier, owned and managed by local and definitely they can easily compete with international players on the island.
The owner was very friendly and caring about everything. He cooked delicious and fresh fish for us and also individually organized the further journey to our next destination. The accomodation was a traditional bungalow and located right next to the beach. Enjoying the sunset and sitting on the swing you just feel like in paradise. It is still a very calm spot with few tourists. Looking out of bed you could see and hear the ocean. A mosquito net was available for the bed. There was clear blue water and the beach was absolutely clean, as the owner is taking care of the cleaning himself. Actually, this was the only clean beach we have seen on our trip through the islands of Indonesia. Snorkeling equipment is also available to see the corals.
Getting to Moyo Island is a little complicated. There is only one public ferry per day from Sumbawa Besar. Alternatively, the owner is offering to pick up the guests from Sumbawa and they are working to establish a more frequent connection in the future. Nevertheless, it is absolutely worth going there!
